Public Works » Animal Control » Success Stories Asia the Rotwieller As told by Kelly Demers, Animal Control Officer In late April 2004 I received a call from a Salem resident asking for help dealing with her sister's Rotwieller. Her elderly sister had fallen in her home and suffered a broken ankle and was unable to remain in her home. She had a 7 year old, 95 pound, Rotweiller female named Asia, that was always kept in her barn. Asia had no contact with the outside world. Her sister asked me to go pick up Asia at her sister's house and take her to be euthanized. I informed her that I would need the owner's consent to euthanize the dog, but in the meantime I went to the residence to get to know Asia. I spent a week going to the residence trying to devise a method of capturing Asia. I was able to have someone distract her enough for me to capture her with my catch pole. I spent the next two weeks at the kennel with Asia getting to know her. Then I felt comfortable enough with her to bring her to the Veterinarian. Asia was found to be heart-worm positive and also needed to be spayed. The heartworm treatment alone was expensive but was able to receive treatment. Asia had to live in my home for one month while she was getting treatment for the heart worms. When she was well enough Asia was spayed and then put up for adoption. Asia was adopted by a couple in Methuen who just adore her.
